Damiana Leaf – (Turnera Diffusa)

Damiana has been used around the world for centuries as an aphrodisiac and to enhance overall sexual health.  Is is also used to treat diabetes and as a remedy for anxiety.  This herb is known to reduce stress, which limits many aspects of our lives; sex included.

Consuming the leaves of the damiana plant increases sexual arousal, or what we like to call libido, in both men and women.  For women, it helps to reduce vaginal dryness and intensifies female orgasms.  For men it’s known to increase testosterone levels and improves male sexual function by widening the tiny arteries and allowing increased blood flow to the penis.  This increased flow of blood may be helpful in achieving or maintaining an erection in men.

Traditional healers often prescribe damiana not only for sexual enhancement, but also as an antidepressant, antiseptic, and diuretic. It is also used to treat symptoms of bladder and urinary issues. Research shows that these benefits stem from the herb’s active ingredients, which include tannins, resins, and five different types of flavonoids. Flavonoids provide health benefits through cell signaling pathways and antioxidant effects.

It is most often consumed in tea form.  It can also be smoked and will give the user a light feeling of euphoria.

Pregnant women and nursing mothers should not consume damiana, nor should people with liver issues. In high doses, this herb is said to cause hallucinations.
